The serum viscosity and the serum proteins.

چکیده
Equal weights of the various protein fractions in plasma affect the plasma specific gravity equally, whereas weight for weight the fractions exert differing influences on the plasma viscosity. Thus fibrinogen has a greater effect on the plasma viscosity than does globulin, which, in turn, has a greater effect than albumin (Bircher, 1921 ; Naegeli, 1931; Oberst, 1939; Cowan and Harkness, 1947). Working with mixtures of albumin and globulin, Naegeli (1931) and Nugent and Towle (1935) have shown that at a constant total protein content the viscosity of the mixture falls as the ratio of albumin to globulin rises, and vice versa. It was considered that perhaps, given the total protein content and the viscosity of a serum, it might be possible to calculate the albumin: globulin ratio. Thus, using the copper sulphate specific gravity method for estimation of the total serum protein level (Harrison, 1947) and a modified Ostwald viscometer for the estimation of the serum viscosity (Lawrence, 1950), the estimation might be completed in under 15 minutes per serum, a much more rapid test than either the Kjeldahl or the Biuret methods. The specific gravity of a seruim can be estimated to ± 0.0005 (± 0.18 g. %), and the serum viscosity ratio is accurate to ±0.2% (Lawrence, 1950). In fact, the estimation of the albumin:globulin ratio by this proposed method was not achieved.

Characteristics of Potential Protein Biomarkers Extracted with 10% TCA from Blood Serum of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Multiple Myeloma Patients
Blood serum has been extensively explored as a source of the bio-markers [1, 2]. For concentration of minor protein(s) and depletion of abundant blood serum proteins a 2,2,2-trichloroacetic acid (TCA) precipitation procedure is frequently applied [3]. However, a significant amount of proteins may be present in the TCA extracts, and these proteins are often not studied.Recently, we have sh...
متن کاملBINDING OF NAPROXEN TO SERUM PROTEINS IN PATIENTS WITH LIVER CIRRHOSIS AND HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS
A three-fold decrease of the in vitro ability of serum proteins to bind naproxen was shown in patients with cirrhosis of the liver compared to healthy individuals. This decrease was caused by quantitative changes in serum proteins in the sera of patients with liver damage. Lower doses of naproxen are therefore suggested in the treatment of patients with liver dysfunction.
متن کاملComparative study of synovial fluid and serum protein electrophoretic pattern of river buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in Ahvaz
Electrophoresis is a meticulous method in para-clinical science but has received less attention. In this study, the protein profile of synovial fluid of carpal joint and blood serum in buffalo was detected. Sampling was performed by arthrocentesis of 80 left and right forelimbs and obtaining blood serums of 40 Bubalus bubalis in Ahvaz industrial slaughterhouse. Samples were str...
متن کاملSerum Liver proteins and 17β-estradiol in Postmenopausal Women with Breast Cancer
Background: Breast cancer is a hormone-dependent malignancy that is associated with estrogen and progesterone interactions. The liver is the most important organ to be affected by the metastasis of breast cancer, which causes functional impairment. We compared levels of obesity, 17β-estradiol, and secreted proteins in postmenopausal women with breast cancer but without hepatic symptoms to those...
متن کاملSome serum acute phase proteins and immunoglobulins concentrations in calves with rotavirus, coronavirus, E. coli F5 and Eimeria species
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in the serum concentrations of haptoglobin (Hp), serum amyloid A (SAA) and IgG, IgA in calves with diarrhea caused by rotavirus, coronavirus, Escherichia coli F5 and Eimeria species. The experiment was carried out on 40 diarrhoeic and 10 non-diarrhoeic calves (group C). A total of 13 calves were infected with rotavirus or coronavirus (group ...
متن کاملDisturbance of serum viscosity in diabetes mellitus.
The serum viscosity of diabetic patients has been found to be increased. The elevation averaged 8% above healthy subjects and 6% above nondiabetic patients. The serum viscosity elevation was greater when diabetic sequelae associated with microangiopathy were present. No relation of serum viscosity to age, sex, obesity, duration of disease, or type of treatment was demonstrated. Serum total prot...
